Guard PhotoDuring FY06, the Wyoming Army National Guard’s (WYARNG) commitment to provide the state and nation with a ready, relevant, and properly-equipped force took the organization in new directions.

The National Guard Bureau mandated a more joint approach to administration for the Army National Guard and Air National Guard, designed to streamline service. Operating jointly helped ensure success when Wyoming National Guard personnel deployed with active duty personnel for missions like Operation Iraqi Freedom or Operation Enduring Freedom. Throughout FY06, the WYARNG maintained a steady deployment pace. The 133rd Engineer Company returned from Iraq, a 14-person cell from Joint Force Headquarters returned from Afghanistan, and the 1041st Engineer Company deployed for Iraq.

The 84th Civil Support Team is the newest unit in the Wyoming National Guard and is the epitome of the joint Army/Air National Guard. The unit is a mix of Soldiers and Airmen with the mission to assist first responders with detecting nuclear, chemical, biological, environmental, or radiological weapons of mass destruction.

Furthering the joint capabilities of the Wyoming Air and Army National Guard, the agency created a quick reaction force which was designed to rapidly respond on short notice to protect Wyoming’s critical infrastructure by providing site security, patrols, check points, security, and other duties as situations warranted.

Guard PhotoWhile the annual funding program provided during FY06 contained several shortfalls, the Wyoming Army National Guard was able to accomplish all required missions and activities, even with the challenges presented by mobilization of several units. The provided funding was adequate, and the WYARNG was able to fund several items on the unfinanced requirement list at the end of the fiscal year.
