Guard PhotoIn FY08, the Nevada Army National Guard (NVARNG) continued its pivotal role in the layered defense of the nation and state. The NVARNG was involved in full-spectrum operations ranging from the persistent conflict, homeland defense, foreign partnerships, state security, and multi-region disaster training missions.

In June, the Nevada Army National Guard hosted Vigilant Guard 2008, a full-scale emergency preparedness and response training exercise designed to test, sharpen, and evaluate the skills, expertise, communication, and coordination of local, state, and federal civilian response agencies and National Guard units from seven western states and six Nevada counties. More than 2,000 Army National Guard participants were successfully exercised, including special guests from Turkmenistan.

Nearly 120 Soldiers of the 593rd Transportation Company returned after a one-year deployment to Iraq where they took on a variety of missions. In total, the unit performed close to 300 missions in nearly a dozen locations throughout Iraq.

Approximately 1,480 Nevada Army National Guard Soldiers have mobilized in support of Operations Enduring and Iraqi Freedom since 2001. More than 550 of those Soldiers deployed abroad into a war theater and are now considered combat veterans. Of the NVARNG’s 18 deployable units, 10 have deployed since 2001 (that number includes Nevada's Embedded Training Team). Several of those units have deployed multiple times over the past seven years.

Guard PhotoThe Nevada Army National Guard fully executed its federal funding in the completion of its statutory requirements and essential missions while addressing most senior leader initiatives during FY08. The Program Budget Advisory Committee overcame national funding shortfalls by integrating sound fiscal management practices. Deployments in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom continued to be the main focus of operations with a substantial effort toward the successful execution and completion of Vigilant Guard 2008. Financial management operations fostered effective relationships and communication within the state and between the National Guard Bureau Comptroller and the Defense Finance and Accounting Service.
