Guard PhotoThroughout FY08, the Puerto Rico Army National Guard (PRARNG) continued to support federal, state, and community missions. At the height of operations, approximately 1,000 citizen-Soldiers supported operations in Afghanistan, Iraq, Kuwait, Guantanamo, Honduras, the Sinai Peninsula, Puerto Rico, and the United States. At the close of the fiscal year, approximately 250 citizen-Soldiers were still deployed, while many others prepared for deployments in 2009. The PRARNG supported state and federal law and drug-enforcement agencies through its Counterdrug Program to reduce illegal drug trafficking and distribution. In the field of logistics the PRARNG excelled, taking the coveted Connelly Award for Best Field Kitchen in the nation and the Supply Excellence Award at company-level. At the state level, more than 200 young adults obtained their high school diplomas through the Youth ChalleNGe Program, and approximately 1,000 elementary school children enhanced their math and science skills through STARBASE. At the close of the fiscal year, PRARNG citizen-Soldiers were mobilized to support disaster relief operations as a result of heavy floods during the hurricane season.

Guard PhotoFY08 found the Puerto Rico Army National Guard in a robust and comprehensive force transformation period. PRARNG citizen-Soldiers continued supporting the persistent conflict in Iraq, Sinai, Afghanistan, and Kuwait; as well as its regular support of U.S. Southern Command in Guantanamo, Honduras, Trinidad and Tobago, Dominican Republic, and Haiti. PRARNG also supported missions in Grafenwoehr and Hohenfels, Germany. More than 2,500 troops are scheduled to deploy throughout FY09 and beyond.
